| Yay!! So this morning I was working on the calendar with my students. We usually look at it as a whole month just to see all the events that we have to look forward to. As I was putting on the No School Crab (I get crabby when I can't teach/see them) and the Field Trip Whale (Whale of a Tale to share when we get back), my students got all excited about the birthdays. I started backwards and put on the ones I had (3 cakes went on the calendar). As I was leaving, one student says, "Ms. Chia, aren't you getting old this month too?" First thought, omg...I'm going to be 30!! Second thought, how rude to say I'm old! Last thought, how cute that he remembered my birthday!!
Anyways, as I have the last couple of 29 to enjoy before I break that barrier of the thirties, I'm realizing that teaching keeps me young. I'm not into celebrating like they do. They expect me to sing and to have cake and all when it's their birthday. I just give them a bookmark, birthday badge sticker, free lemonade coupon, and a bag of skittles (the regular sized ones). In any sense, my students have so much more fun on my birthday since I bring cupcakes to give out. What happened to being so innocent and enjoy every new moment in life? I have so much to learn from these 8 year olds. Anyways, I have two birthday parties to go to (flower girl turning 8, student turning 8) and 2 weddings to look forward to this month, and not but least, black friday with a wedding banquet.
Oh yeah....this is for Kong and Pattycakes....Oppa is thinking about getting me a laptop, cable, and internet for my birthday. Is this really for me or for his enjoyment on the fantasy football/fantasy basketball side of life? We'll see as 1 year anniversary is around the corner too!! | | |
| Another summer has come with the winds and gone with the sunshine. We started with the close of a school year. Finishing a third grade class which was very different. Then had to teach Kinder going to First and was a lesson of how different kids are at different ages. With that being over in 6 weeks, Tim and I headed to Maui. We took about 3 weeks to plan it, thanks to Patty's help, and off we went. We snorkeled, went to a Luau, and Tim snorkeled with a turtle in the ocean. Josie sat at the beach and sat at the pool. We were so lazy but we got some hiking in at the Blowhole there. It was a crazy hike down and up.
With a lot of rest, we went back to school to start the year. We enjoyed some randomness and hosted a staff party at our house. Meetings were abundant this week and the chance to get some help from the student was worth it. I had my two flowergirls come in to help with labels, cutting, and putting together pencil boxes. I'm ready to plan and get Back to School Night under my belt.
With the summer over, we now look forward to the new adventures with a new class. Tim has three of my old students while I have two of my old students. It's been really fun and we can't wait for the new lessons that we will learn. Keep the fingers crossed and let's enjoy the ride. (Smile)

| Since I'm on summer break, it's been nice to catch up on movies. I've done the Blockbuster $10 rental for 7 days, and we had almost 3 movies a day (yes we are that crazy), and we have Netflix. Not to mention the $5 movie theater down the street also. Anyways, we finally saw Hangover (liked it). It's so hilarious if you like the crude jokes. I still can't get over the whole story plot. Very creative. Also, we saw Harry Potter yesterday. Interesting, but I still have to read the book before watching the movie. It just makes more sense for me. Now...since I've seen movies, why the title? Well, we ran out of things to put on Netflix, yes...good things that we both want to watch. Tim wanted to get in touch with his Transformer era, so we put the old cartoon movie on (bad choice) and the cartoon series. We also added Gummi Bears (so funny and cute) and Ducktales (yes, Webby is still the cutest). After watching them, it's funny how we used to love watching all of these cartoons and enjoyed it. Gummi Bears has the special gummi beary juice that makes them bounce and makes humans strong. Then you have Ducktales that have the special number 1 dime that Scrooge has. It's so interesting to see the change of cartoons over the years. I have to admit, I think if I ever have kids, they better like the old Smurfs, Thundercats, Transformers, and stuff that we grew up on. None of this Pokemon or SpongeBob. (Smile) | | |
| Yes, it's been two weeks since the last day of school. As always, we left for Vegas with the roommie (not the hubby) and then went off to the Apple Farm with the Rhee Family vacation. Needless to say, hanging out with two little boys (both under 6) is really tiring. Alas, we survived and made it back alive. (Smile) Now, we start teaching summer school. This is the first time we've taught summer school in the 6 years that I've taught. Can you believe it? Well, it's us waking at 6:15 am to get to the school by 8:15 am. We have to work 4 hours. (Teaching students at 3 hours each Monday to Thursday). Let's just say, we get home around 2 and take a long nap. hahhaha...now you may say...come on Josie. But I'm telling you, working with 5 year olds for an hour is seriously tiring!! It's been two days, and I only have 18 students, but it's so tiring. I don't know where they get all their energy! Since I have to teach the Kindergarten (going to First Grade in September) then I have to teach the basic. Let's just say that they write the numbers 2,3,4,5,7 all backwards and some don't know their letters with the sounds. Okay, with the little ones, everyday moment is surprising. I've gotten a random..."your ring is pretty" to "mr. chen" to a little girl sticking her hand in my pocket today. It's always a weird day and all I can do is laugh and wonder why they can't sit in a chair for longer than 5 minutes. I have a couple of boys that don't understand what listen means. Always an interesting day!! Alas, 21 more days to go with these little kids. Well, soon it'll be time for us to plan another trip. Where should we go? Anyone have ideas for a week trip? And no, don't say Vegas since we're all ready going. (Smile) | | |
| Now, some of you who saw the title might be thinking...what the...alcohol, drugs, smoking, poker...? Well, I'm not addicted to all the things that are running through your mind. What I am addicted to is Books. Tim recently asked me why I have so many books. He didn't understand the need to take care of them as if they were brand new and the reason why I could read a book over and over again. Well, I can and I do! (Smile) It all started about a week ago. The teachers on staff were talking about this book series that the 5th graders were reading. It was one of those books that you would be glad the whole series was out. In case you have no clue, it's the Twilight Book Series. Yes, I too have been affected by the storyline and the ideas that are going through the story plot. I can see why parents are against the book. I can also see why the students like it. It's hard to explain, but it's not as bad as might want think. You can interpret it any way you want. Anyways, I read the first book in a day (yes all of it in one day) and then needed to watch the movie. Movie...BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!!! I had to find out what happened to the characters, so I asked the wonderful husband of mine if we could go to the bookstore. We went in a matter of minutes and when we got there, I found the series. Yes, I bought the whole 4 book series. It wasn't just paperback...no, I got the hardback. Yes, the husband said...GO FOR IT when I looked at him. It might have been the pleading look, or the pouty lips, or just the whole...Please. I got my books in hand, went cheerfully to the register and started a conversation with the sales clerk. He and I had a moment of Twilight understanding talk. Then, I skipped happily to the car. It was a great night. I then started to read the book once I got home. Actually took the laundry out, folded it and then started to read. Needless to say, that was Monday. I'm all done with book 2 and I'm getting ready to go start Book 3. However, we are sitting at Ken's place watching the Nuggets beat the Mavs. Whoo hoo....better start sleeping as I do teach for the next 5 weeks. Then it's....SUMMER!!! (Smile). And yes, I will probably reread the books a couple of times. (Smile) | | |
